Significant Dates

  • Fall 1983:  Abby (McDonald) Schwartz and Rashmi (Khanna) Drummond decide to create a sorority for women in engineering.
  • September 24, 1984:  The Purdue-Alpha chapter of Phi Sigma Rho is started with 10 charter members.
  • February 25, 1985:  The Purdue-Alpha chapter is recognized as a student organization.
  • April 1985:  The pyramid and the star are chosen as the Sorority symbols.
  • August 1985:  Sorority colors are changed from sea mist green and jade to wine red and silver.
  • September 4, 1985:  The first sorority rush held at Purdue-Alpha yields a Beta class of seven.
  • January 1986:  The penguin is chosen as the Sorority mascot.
  • February 1986:  The sorority oath is established.
  • March 1986:  The U.S. Woman Engineer magazine publishes the story of Phi Sigma Rho.
  • April 4, 1986:  The Gamma class of Purdue-Alpha creates the Phi Sigma Rho Creed.
  • May 1986:  The Purdue-Alpha chapter is accepted as an associate member of the Purdue Panhellenic Association.
  • November 1, 1986:  The first annual Orchid Ball of Purdue-Alpha is held in Lafayette, Indiana.
  • April 1987:  The Delta class of Purdue-Alpha presents Sisters We Are.
  • August 13, 1987:  A group from Purdue-Alpha attends the Triangle Fraternity National Convention at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
  • February 1988:  The Coat-of-Arms is designed by Tracy Blair, Purdue-A1985.
  • February 6, 1988:  First National Council meeting is held with Gail (Bonney) Boydston, Purdue-A1984, Donna Lee, Purdue-A1986, and Rashmi (Khanna) Drummond, Purdue-A1984.
  • April 24, 1988:  The 4 charter members of Ohio State-Beta chapter are initiated at Purdue University.
  • December 6, 1988: The installation of the Ohio State-Beta chapter is conducted.
  • October 29, 1989:  The 26 charter members of Dayton-Gamma chapter are initiated at Purdue University.
  • November 2, 1991:  The installation of the Dayton-Gamma chapter is conducted.
  • August 10, 1991:  The Badge design is revised and approved at the National Convention.  The new design becomes the first official Badge of Phi Sigma Rho.  The design was produced by a jeweler in 1993.
  • January 11, 1992:  The 9 charter members of Toledo-Delta chapter are initiated in Toledo, Ohio.
  • February 6, 1998:  The constitution is revised into a Governing Laws document consisting of a Constitution and Bylaws.
  • April 25, 1999:  The 8 charter members of Kentucky-Epsilon chapter are initiated in Lexington, Kentucky.
  • June 2011: The 8th National Council develops the first sorority strategic plan, a 5-year plan covering 2000-2004 which provides the national organization with goals and future structure.
  • January 8, 2000:  The 13 charter members of Pittsburgh-Zeta chapter are initiated in Columbus, Ohio.
  • September 30, 2000:  The installations of Kentucky-Epsilon chapter and Pittsburgh-Zeta chapter are conducted in Columbus, Ohio.
  • April 21, 2001:  The 27 charter members of Michigan-Eta chapter are initiated in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
  • April 23, 2001:  The 12 charter members of Connecticut-Theta chapter are initiated in Storrs, Connecticut.
  • May 18, 2001:  The 10 charter members of Ohio Northern-Iota chapter are initiated in Ada, Ohio.
  • August 11, 2001:  The installation of Connecticut-Theta chapter is conducted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  • August 11, 2001:  The Sorority Logo is revealed at the August meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  • November 2001:  Phi Sigma Rho’s 1000th sister is initiated.
  • November 10, 2001:  The Installations of Michigan-Eta and Ohio Northern-Iota chapters are conducted in Toledo, Ohio.
  • March 2, 2002:  The 9 charter members of Arkansas-Kappa chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
  • March 16, 2002:  The 15 charter members of Penn State-Lambda chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at the Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania.
  • August 3, 2002:  The design of the jeweled badge is approved by a vote of the National Convention.
  • October 5, 2002:  The 15 charter members of Washington-Mu chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
  • March 1, 2003:  The 9 charter members of UCLA-Nu chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter in conducted at the University of California-Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California.
  • December 6, 2003:  The 15 charter members of Rutgers-Xi chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
  • December 6, 2003:  The 12 charter members of Case Western-Omicron chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • April 4, 2004:  The Missouri Rolla-Rho (Now MS&T-Rho) chapter installation is conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla in Rolla, Missouri. The 13 charter members of Missouri Rolla-Rho (Now MS&T-Rho) chapter are initiated
  • April 4, 2004:  The installation of the UCI-Pi chapter is conducted at the University of California, Irvine in Irvine, California. The 8 charter members of UCI-Pi chapter are initiated.
  • September 24-26, 2004:  The Phi Sigma Rho 20th Anniversary Gala is held in West Lafayette, Indiana.
  • January 22, 2005:  The 10 charter members of Oregon State-Sigma chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.
  • March 1, 2005:  The Phi Sigma Rho Foundation receives Articles of Incorporation.
  • March 14, 2005:  The first Foundation board of directors is elected.
  • June 7, 2005:  The Foundation receives notification of tax-exempt 501(c)(3) according to the Internal Revenue Code.
  • July 29-31, 2005:  The first Phi Sigma Rho/Triangle Fraternity Joint National Convention is held in Lisle, Illinois.
  • November 20, 2005: The installation of the Florida-Tau chapter is conducted at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
  • December 3, 2005: The installation of the Houston-Upsilon chapter is conducted at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas.
  • July 28-30, 2006: The first Phi Sigma Rho Leadership Conference is held at the University of Dayton.
  • March 11, 2007: The Installation of the Howard-Phi chapter is conducted at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
  • November 17, 2007: The installation of the UCSD Chi chapter is conducted at the University of California, San Diego in San Diego, California. The 21 charter members (Alpha, Beta, Gamma) of UCSD-Chi chapter are initiated.
  • March 1-2, 2008:  Penn State-Lambda hosts the pilot Regional Conference in State College, PA.
  • July 16-19, 2009: Phi Sigma Rho holds National Convention in Pittsburgh, PA and celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Sorority Founding. An official Sigmand penguin mascot is revealed. The 12th National Council is elected.
  • February 10-13, 2011: The Phi Sigma Rho and Triangle National Councils hold their first joint meetings in San Diego, California to grow their relationship.
  • February 11, 2011: The installation of the Cal Poly Pomona-Psi Chapter is conducted in San Diego in front of over 70 actives and alumnae including the 12th National Council.
  • April 9, 2011: The Virginia Commonwealth Colony is initiated in Richmond, VA.  Their chapter installation was held for National Convention 2011.
  • May 7, 2011: The installation of the Youngstown State-Alpha Alpha Chapter is conducted at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio.
  • July 13, 2011: Phi Sigma Rho Sorority and Triangle Fraternity approve a jointly written relationship statement describing potential areas of collaboration, what our relationship is, and what our relationship is not.
  • May 29, 2012: The new ritual manual is approved by the National Convention.
  • July 16, 2011: The installation of the Virginia Commonwealth-Omega Chapter is conducted at National Convention 2011 in front of the 12th and 13th National Councils, Abby (McDonald) Schwartz, Christine (Mooney)  Jackson, and representatives from every chapter during the ritual demonstration.
  • November 5, 2011: The installation of the Cincinnati-Alpha Beta Chapter is conducted in front of the 13th National Council at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • July 20, 2012: The installation of the Louisville-Alpha Gamma Chapter is conducted in front of the 13th National Council in the meeting room of the Purdue-Alpha Chapter house at the National Leadership Conference held in West Lafayette, Indiana.
  • December 1, 2012: The installation of the Michigan State-Alpha Delta Chapter is conducted in front of the 13th National Council at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.
  • March 24, 2013: The installation of the Illinois-Alpha Epsilon Chapter is conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in Champaign, Illinois.
  • April 14, 2013: The installation of the Wright State-Alpha Zeta chapter is conducted at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
  • November 15, 2014: The installation of the Vanderbilt University-Alpha Eta chapter is conducted at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
  • April 25, 2015: The installation of the University of California, Berkeley-Alpha Theta chapter is conducted at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California.
  • February 28, 2016: The charter members of the Penn State Behrend-Alpha Iota chapter are initiated and the Installation of the chapter is conducted at Penn State University-Behrend in Erie, Pennsylvania.
  • April 24, 2016: The installation of the University of Arizona-Alpha Kappa chapter is conducted at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.
  • September 10, 2016: The installation of the Arizona State University-Alpha Lambda Chapter is conducted at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.
