Lauren Brace, a 2006 Graduate from Case Western Reserve University – Omicron chapter, was recently named in the university’s “30 Under 30” spotlight. Lauren is a Materials Scientist at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio. She enjoys reaching out to young students to inspire them to explore STEM fields through her company’s Engineering Career Day. Lauren was initiated as a member of the Alpha class of the Omicron chapter in 2003. Through her years as an active, she held positions of house manager, secretary, membership educator, scholarship chair, and webmaster. As an alumna, Lauren served as the alumnae advisor/chapter support chair for two years after graduation.
Reflecting on her accomplishments in Phi Rho, Lauren remembers everything the chapter overcame as a group to become a successful chapter. We had to have a ton of determination, fearlessness, and selflessness to get where we are today. We were the first group in many years attempting to get into CWRU's Panhellenic, so there was a great deal of opposition, but we made it in and even opened the door for a few new chapters of other sororities as well. We survived our first formal rush and all those since, even though many of us had never participated in those events as potential new members, and we've managed to kick butt in Greek Week on several occasions.
In 2005, we were given the opportunity to have a house. Of course, that was a welcome reprieve from living in a dorm suite with all of the sorority stuff stored in the common room, but that meant that many of us who had planned to move off campus had to change our plans to ensure the chapter got a house. Being a member of Phi Sigma Rho certainly helped Lauren grow as a leader. Lauren says, It's all of these experiences that don't appear "on paper" that have helped me immensely in navigating my schooling and career thus far. Teamwork in Research & Development is essential, and decisions are sometimes met with opposition. Knowing how to handle those types of situations is something that must be learned over time, and being a Phi Rho has very much set me in the right direction!
Congratulations to Lauren for earning such a wonderful recognition!
